- This is in a scrapbook in the front of Box 41 entitled 'Some of the Prime Exhibits in the Smithsonian Institution, U.S. National Museum and National Air Museum. Prepared for Mr. J.E. Graf by the National Air Museum.' Also includes all the flights of the aircraft.
- Summary
- In the Arts and Industries Building, the "Winnie Mae," suspended from the ceiling above exhibit cases holding coins from the Numismatics Exhibit and the paintings on the walls from the Smithsonian National Gallery of Art, is the airplane which Wiley Post flew around the world twice, first in 1931 with Harold Gatty in eight and two-third days, and again in 1933 solo in seven and three-fourth days. The plane is a special Lockheed Model 5C Vega. The landings were recorded on the fuselage and the distance of each flight was about 16,000 miles. The "Winnie Mae" was purchased from Mrs. Wiley Post in 1936 and deposited by the Smithsonian Institution to the museum.
