Wimbledon Tennis Trophy, won by Althea Gibson
Object Details
- Gibson, Althea
- Description
- One silver plate, made by Birch and Gaydon, displayed on a wooden base, with a silver plaque awarded to Althea Gibson for winning the Ladies Singles championship at the All-England Lawn Tennis Club, Wimbledon, in 1958. The plate is a smaller replica of the Club's trophy, which they retain.
- Gibson was the first person of color to win a singles event at Wimbledon, hoisting the trophy twice, in 1957 and 1958. She was also the first black woman to play in the U.S. Tennis Championships (1950), win the U.S. Open and complete a Grand-Slam. Gibson later broke the color barrier in professional golf when she joined the LPGA in 1964.
