- “Latino art is American art plus,” said Tomás YbarraFrausto (born 1938). An art historian, scholar, and professor, Ybarra-Frausto has championed Chicanx and Latinx artists. Ybarra-Frausto established himself as a cultural leader in El Movimiento, the 1960s movement for the empowerment of Mexican Americans. Since then, his work has advanced the study of art produced by historically colonized peoples and migrant communities in the United States.
- Artist Cruz Ortiz honors his fellow Texan by visually linking Ybarra-Frausto to the region he calls home. Ortiz pictures him next to a blue agave plant, donning his typical hat and cane. The title references Aztlán, the mythical origin of the Aztec people and the symbolic land of Chicanos.
