This medal was made by Bedros A. Sevadjian in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. It was presented to Duke Ellington by Emperor Haile Selassie in 1973. The medal is an 8-pointed Star of Ethiopia made of metal with a green, red, and yellow ribbon. The medal is accessioned with an original wooden box covered in green leather, metal clasp, and lined with white plush. The medal is stamped:

ADDIS ABABADuke Ellington and his Orchestra were on their last European tour in late 1973 when The U.S. State Department arranged performances for the group in Africa, before their return to the United States. The African leg of the tour included performances in Addis Ababa, Egypt on November 21, 22, and 23 and then in Nairobi, Kenya on November 24, and 25. Ellington and his Orchestra departed for the United States the following day where they concluded their 1973 tour.
