- Nancy Pelosi received this gavel when she was elected to be the first woman to serve as Speaker of the United States House of Representatives in 2007. When Pelosi was elected to congress in 1987, she was one of twenty-five women—two in the Senate and twenty-three in the House. She became the first woman to serve as a House party whip (2002) and minority leader (2011). Nancy Pelosi served as Speaker of the House from 2007-2011 and from 2019-2023.
