Souvenir Plate from the 1998 Nagano Summer Olympic Games

National Museum of American History

Object Details

Description (Brief)
Souvenir plate from the Nagano Olympics has a red epoxy base with a gold painted surface that has the Olympic rings painted on the surface. There is a wooden stand for the plate to be displayed on and the original box is also included.
The 1998 Winter Olympics, also known as the Games of the XV Olympiad were held in Calgary, Canada with 57 countries, 1,122 men and 301 women athletes participating. Due to extreme wind and weather conditions that affected the outdoor venues, it was the first time Alpine events were held on man-made snow. These games featured “The Battle of the Brians” in figure skating with American Brian Boitano winning gold over Canadian Brian Orser. The women figure skaters also battled it out-performing to the same music from Carmen with East Germany’s Katarina Witt taking gold and the American Debi Thomas placing third. Para-alpine skiing events for those disabled athletes who used seated equipment and who were visually impaired were introduced at the ’88 games. The Soviets won the medal count with 29 with the United States coming in ninth out of ten with six medals.
