Object Details
- Description (Brief)
- Souvenir sculpture, 1932 Olympic Games
- The 10th Olympic Games were held in Los Angeles, California in 1932. At the games, well-known multi-sport athlete Mildred "Babe" Didrikson (Zaharias) (1911-1956) won two gold medals in track and field. During this era, many women challenged traditional gender roles, including in sports. After the Olympics, Didrikson Zaharias became a star professional golfer.
- The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, originally built in 1921 as a memorial to Los Angeles veterans of the First World War, was enlarged to host the 1932 Olympics. The structure became a symbol of the international event, hosting the 1984 games 52 years later.
- The Coliseum has been home to the University of Southern California Trojans football team since 1932. Other teams that have used the stadium include the National Football Leagues Los Angeles Rams (1946-1979, 2016-2019) and Los Angeles Raiders (1982-1994.) It was also home to the University of California Los Angeles Bruins (1933-1981.)
- The 1932 Summer Olympics, also known as the Games of the X Olympiad were held in Los Angeles, California and included 37 countries, 1,206 men and 126 women athletes participating, fewer than the 1928 Games as the depression kept many athletes from making the trip. Because of the expense of putting on the Games, many existing venues were used including the Rose Bowl and the LA Coliseum. An official Olympic Village debuted at the 1932 Games consisting of hundreds of buildings to house and take care of the athletes becoming the standard for future games. The victory podium was first used at the Summer Games along with the debut of the Olympic mascot; a Scottish Terrier named Smoky. American athlete Babe Didrikson was a standout, winning two gold medals in the javelin and hurdles events although earned silver in high jump after being penalized for an illegal jump-off. The United States led the medal count with 103.
