- Despite never having learned to swim, Soichi Sakamoto (far left) inspired Hawaiian children to become Olympians and trained future gold, silver, and bronze medalists. He trained Pu‘une¯ne¯ children who, because of segregationist policies, were not allowed at public pools and had to resort to swimming in irrigation ditches on sugar plantations.
- In June 1937, Sakamoto established his “Three Year Swim Club,” with the goal of transforming his students into Olympic-caliber swimmers. Although World War II led to the cancellation of the 1940 Summer Olympic Games, Sakamoto’s students went on to earn medals at subsequent Olympics and to win multiple national and international titles. Credited with introducing both interval and resistance training, Sakamoto was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 1966.
