- Elisha Kent Kane was a member of the First Grinnell Expedition of 1850 - 1851, financed by Henry Grinnell, to determine the fate of the lost Franklin Polar Expedition. Kane was the leader of the Second Grinnell Expedition of 1853 - 1855. Grinnell also supported the expeditions of Charles Francis Hall.
