- Photograph of Sitting Bull, Hunkpapa Lakota chief and holy man. He is wearing traditional clothing with a single feather on his head and a pipe in his right hand. He is standing in a photo studio and has his right hand resting on the arm of a chair. Written upside down on back in ink: "To Mother / From Mary / Aug. 29th, 1880 / Fort Yates." Beneath that in pencil is written the instructions, apparently to the framer: "Put on mat / 1 1/2 inch with mould / marked X 4". Stamped right side up in black ink is the maker's mark "D.F. Barry, / Photographer, / Bismark, D.T." followed by "Photographs of all noted Indian Chiefs. / Duplicates can be obtained by addressing the / Photographer." This photograph was originally framed as part of a triptych along with a photo of Louis Sitting Bull (2003.0311.24) at center and a photo of Standing Holy (2003.0311.25) at right.
