- Pierre Lods, founder of the Poto-Poto school of painting in Brazzaville, fell into this vocation more by chance than design. From its casual inception in 1951, Poto-Poto was always an informal school. No course were taught. Would-be artists were given paints and canvasses and encouraged to express themselves freely. During the 1950s, several exhibition were held in Africa and abroad. When Lods departed for Senegal in 1960, Nicholas Ondongo, a former student, became director. Tati-Loutard recounts the history of Poto-Poto and its painting styles, characterized as the "Mickeys" (cartoon-like figures), the surrealist style, and the naturalist style.
