- Published in parts between 1925 and 1928. According to Stafleu & Cowan, part 1 was issued in 1925, with a new foreword appearing in 1927; part 2 was probably issued in 1926; part 3 was issued in 1927, accompanied by the new foreword and a slip dated 15 November 1927; and parts 4 and 5 issued in 1928
- Issued in 5 portfolio volumes of quarter-bound black leather with gray cloth-covered boards, gilt-tooled spines, and gray ribbon ties, with a silver-colored oxidized metal Smithsonian seal mounted on the front of each portfolio
- The illustrations, many dated 1925, are reproductions of watercolor drawings by the author
- Volume 1 contains plates numbered 1-77, 24a, 31a, and 56a (for a total of 80 plates); volume 2 contains plates 81-160; volume 3 contains plates 161-240; volume 4 contains plates 241-320; and volume 5 contains plates 321-400
- Also issued in a quarto-sized "library edition" (32 x 24 cm) with title pages dated 1925. The library edition was issued in five linen-covered portfolios each containing a paperbound volume of text and a set of loose plates
