- A graduate of Mt. Holyoke, mycologist Vera Katherine Charles (1877-1954) earned a Ph.D. at Cornell University in 1903 and then became a scientist at Bureau of Plant Industry, U.S. Department of Agriculture, where she worked until 1942.
