- The Kwakiutl Native Americans lived on the Pacific Northwest Coast. Because of the rainy weather and abundance of trees, the Kwakiutl lived in cedar-plank houses with bark roofs. Many of the KwakiutlÂ’s wooden pieces (jewelry, tools, appliances, etc.) were decorated with symbols representing their beliefs and practices. House posts often had human and animal forms carved into them and large, carved totem poles stood outside of the homes. The Kwakiutl would decorate elaborate masks for ceremonies, like the one pictured. This mask has movable jaws and was painted in bright colors. I bet it sure was heavy to wear around on your head!
