- The family of Ricci was a very ancient and illustrious one in Tuscany, and remains so at the present day. Santa Catalina belonged to it, being the daughter of Pedro Ricci and Catalina Boreya, and was born in the year 1522. . . . This painting, taken from the Mission of San Ignacio, is the work of Esquivel, a disciple of the Cabrera school. His magnificent pictures adorn the principal temples and universities of Mexico, and some of the European galleries. His great celebrity consists in the use of his colors which speak for themselves. Each painting is signed by his name. [Pp. 16-18; excerpted from a detailed biography of Santa Catalina de Ricci.]
