Rose Bowl Pinback Button

National Museum of American History

Object Details

Description
This football button has a white background with blue and red printing. This is an official souvenir button of the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. Although the exact date of this particular button is unknown, the Rose Bowl has been a key part of college football and key American attraction since 1902. While the first Rose Bowl failed to generate enough attention to be considered a success, it would return in 1916 and has been held every year since. The first game was actually known as the "Tournament East-West football game" and was added to help cover costs of the Rose Parade. The first game was so lopsided that the Tournament of Roses officials opted for chariot races, ostrich races and other events in place of football for the next 13 years. Traditionally the Rose Bowl features a team from the Pac-12 (previously Pac-10, Pac-8, Pac-6) against a team from the Big 10. The Rose Bowl has also been played at Tournament Park (1902, 1916-22) and Duke Stadium (1942). Duke Stadium was selected as the site in 1942 due to fears of a Japanese attack on the west coast.
