- American football can be linked back to early versions of rugby and football games that were played in Great Britain in the mid-1800s. Yale graduate, Walter Camp, altered a few rules and changed the game to the football that we know today. Because of this, he has become known as the Father of American Football. Professional football began in the late 1800s with a $500 contract to play in a game. Branching off from this, the National Football League (NFL) began in the early 1900s. What started as a sport from Midwestern factory towns has grown to be a popular sport nationwide. In the late 1960s, the American Football League (AFL) was created. This created a rivalry between the NFL and the AFL, which resulted in the Super Bowl. The Super Bowl is the biggest football game of the entire season and is the most viewed television event of the year!
