Psychological Test with Directions, Army Group Examination Alpha Form 7
Object Details
- Kansas Normal School
- Description
- During World War I, a group of psychologists working for the United States Army developed two group tests of intelligence for use in the classification of new soldiers. One (dubbed the Army Alpha) was designed for soldiers who could read and read English. The second, called the Army Beta, was for recruits who could not. After the war, the U.S. War Department gave permission for the reprinting of these tests. This is a version of the Army Alpha in forms 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 – this is form 7. It was published by the Bureau of Educational Measurements and Standards of the Kansas State Normal School (now Emporia State University) in Emporia, Kansas, under a 1919 letter of permission from the War Department. It was intended for use in schools.
- In addition, there is a set of directions by Elsie O. Bregman (1896-1969) that was published by the Psychological Corporation of New York in 1921. It explains that a new version of the Army Alpha combines questions from the five forms of the Army Alpha used during World War I. The version of the Army Alpha prepared by Bregman is not the same as the test published in Kansas. For the test she edited and for biographical information about Bregman, see 1989.0710.06.
- For a version of the Army Alpha actually published by the U.S. Army during World War I, see 1990.0334.01.
