- Summary
- This left foot pedal is part of the accessories kit for a cycle ergometer flown on space shuttle missions for the astronauts' daily exercise. The crew assembled the device in orbit, attaching the seat part to the ergometer (computer) base and then attaching the pedals to rotating crank arms installed on the sides of the base. They secured the assembly to the floor of the crew cabin and then rode the cycle in either a recumbent or upright position, using bungee cords or adjustable straps to keep themselves in place. NASA sent a complete cycle ergometer kit to the Museum when the space shuttle program ended.
