- Geraldo Rivera was a brash young lawyer representing the New York City–based Puerto Rican activist group the Young Lords when an executive at ABC spotted him speaking on The Today Show and offered him a job as a news reporter. Rivera carried his aggressive and flamboyant style to television, reporting on social issues like migrant labor and drug addiction. In 1972 he won the prestigious Peabody Award for his report on the abuse of patients with mental disabilities at Willowbrook State School. Soon he began appearing on 20/20, Nightline, and Good Morning America. Later he championed tabloid news and sensationalism in his talk show Geraldo (1987–98). In 2001 he left his show Rivera Live on CNBC to become a war correspondent with Fox News; he is now the network’s senior correspondent.
