Object Details
- Collector
- Maj. William M. Beebe JR.
- Greely Relief Expedition
- Donor Name
- U.S. Department Of War
- This object is associated with kayak Catalogue No. E72564-0, which is identified as collected in 1882 from Disko Bay, Greenland by Major Wm. M. Beebe, Jr..
- From 19th or early 20th century exhibit label with card: "Paddle - Double, with narrow blades shod with bone, and with a stout wooden handle. Accompanies Kaiak No. 72,564. Length, 7 feet. Greenland, 1882. Deposited by Chief Signal Officer, U.S. War Department."
- This paddle was found misnumbered as E398278, old Division of Engineering # 76281. It also had number 72569 and "Greenland, US War Dept" written on it in old handwriting, which appears to be correct catalogue #, as it is a Greenland style bone-edged double blade kayak paddle per Harvey Golden, 3-5-2008.
