Stone Carving
Object Details
- Donor Name
- Dr. J. Walter Fewkes
- From card: "This object represents rudely a human figure, and shows on its surface many lines which were made by an iron implement. With these file marks there are also other figures which have been identified as hieroglypics. Padre [José María] Nazario considers that these hieroglyphics belong to the ancient writing possessed by the prehistoric Porto Ricans. In his collection there are several bureaus full of stone objects inscribed like this. He also has a stone slab covered with these figures. This specimen is a fair type of the forms of these hieroglyphics which have been seen. Believed by Doctor [Jesse Walter] Fewkes to be a fraud. These stones with hieroglyphic writings are reported to be found in the mountains in the western end of the island. Stored in L.A. Fake collection."
