- Description
- James Stevenson (1840-1888) was a self-taught geologist, naturalist, and anthropologist who worked for the U.S. Geological Survey, often in close collaboration with his wife, Matilda Coxe Stevenson (1849-1915). He acquired this bowl from Zuni people in New Mexico, in 1884-5, and deposited it with the Bureau of American Ethnology. An inscription on the bottom reads “111421. / Zuni. / N. M. / Stevenson. / Bur. Ethnol.”
