- "The New Mutants began as a 1982 spin-off of the long running Marvel Comics series The X-Men. Like the X-Men, the New Mutants are a group of young mutants born with superpowers who are often persecuted for their differences.
- The cover for this 1988 issue, features the Latinx characters Empath and Magma.
- Empath, a Spanish mutant named Manuel de la Rocha, has the power to sense and manipulate emotions. Magma (Amara Aquilla,) comes from a fictional colony hidden in the Amazon rainforest named Nova Roma. Her powers include the ability to control Earth's tectonic plates, assume a magma form that radiates light and heat, and the ability to create flame and molten projectiles.
