- From the first LGBT pride march in Austin, Texas, in June 1995. National Coming Out Day (NCOD) grew out of the 1987 March on Washington. NCOD was crafted by Rob Eichberg, founder of a personal growth workshop, and Jean O’Leary, then head of National Gay Rights Advocates. The event is commemorated each year on October 11 and aims to “continue to promote a safe world for LGBTQ individuals to live truthfully and openly,” according the Human Rights Campaign website as of October 2016. The design of this button, drawn by artist Keith Haring, was adopted by NCOD in 1987.
