- This is part of collection of software and other materials assembled over the years by Smithsonian curator Jon Eklund. This 3 1/2" disk demonstrates the properties of version 3.1 of Windows, a graphical operating system sold by Microsoft. The program was first released in 1985 as an improvement of MS-DOS that featured a graphical interface. Version 3.1 was first generally available in 1992.
