Object Details
- Bausch & Lomb Optical Company
- Description
- This is a compound monocular with coarse and fine focus, double nosepiece (one is missing), circular stage, trunnion, sub-stage diaphragm and support for sub-stage mirror, and Y-shaped base. The stage and the nosepiece are inscribed “BAUSCH & LOMB / OPTICAL CO.” The base and limb are Japanned black.
- Bausch & Lomb introduced this form in 1884, terming it the Model No. 520 and noting that it had been constructed “in compliance with a generally expressed demand for a simple, low-priced and well-made instrument, which is adapted to every grade of work.” The stand with wooden case cost $25; with two objectives and camera lucida it cost $45.
- In 1900, Bausch & Lomb termed this the American Type Microscope, Model F, noting that it “represents a distinct type of instrument, possessing the advantages of lightness, graceful proportions, and convenience for working combined with stability and low cost. It has been for many years the standard instrument in a large number of laboratories, and a prime favorite with individual workers.”
