- Summary
- Colossal plaster tablet, consisting of figures in high relief, with a portrait of Robert Gould Shaw on horse in foreground, with soldiers in background and an angel figure flying overhead. Colonel Shaw is depicted in campaign uniform and fatigue cap, seated on horse, with sword at his side in proper right hand. In the background are ranks of marching black soldiers. They carry bedrolls on their backpacks and are holding rifles over the shoulders. They are preceded by a drummer boy. An allegorical female angel figure floats above the figures, with her proper left hand extended outward and her proper right hand clasping laurel. Her head is turned downward; her drapery is horizontally arranged. The plaster cast is set within a wooden frame, part of a protective structure.
