American Defense Service Medal; Obverse: relief of Lady Liberty (Goddess Nike) brandishing a sword in her right hand and holding a shield behind her back with her left arm, embossed text "AMERICAN DEFENSE"; embossed text "FOR SERVICE DURING THE LIMITED EMERGENCY PROCLAIMED BY THE PRESIDENT ON SEPTEMBER 8, 1939 OR DURING THE UNLIMITED EMERGENCY PROCLAIMED BY THE PRESIDENT ON MAY 27, 1941."

Summary

This American Defense Service Medal was authorized on June 28, 1941 and isssued to members of the United States Armed forces for service to the country during the limited emergency proclaimed by the President on September 8, 1939 or the unlimited national emergency proclaimed on May 27, 1941.
