Labor Day
Object Details
- Berryman, Clifford
- Description
- This object is an original pen and ink political cartoon hand drawn on white paper by Clifford Berryman circa 1904 in Washington, D.C. It depicts George B. Cortelyou (Chairman of the Republican National Committee in 1904, formerly appointed Secretary of Commerce and Labor in 1903) and Thomas Taggart (Chairman of the Democratic National Committee) running in a field, with a bee named Labor Vote, and a rhyming message "How does the little Labor Bee Employ each shining Minute? Dodging the Campaign Managers Because there's Nothing in it!" The drawing is signed “Berryman” in the lower right area of the illustration.
- The bee was a device used by Berryman to indicate “buzz” surrounding politics of the moment and would sometimes show the bee buzzing in a candidate’s ear.
