- Bark Characteristics
- Young bark is thin, red-brown and scaly. Mature bark is gray with shallow fissures.
- Cone Characteristics
- Seed and pollen cones are on seperate trees. Seed cones look like small berries which emerge green but darken to purple or brown with a waxy coating 18 months after pollination. Seed cones are .2-.36" across. Pollen cones are yellow and .12-.2" across.

- Leaves are sharply pointed green needles which are up to 1" long, grow in whorls of 3, and have a white band on their upper surface. "Rigida," or rigid, refers to the needles.
