Russian traders historically had used the term "Aleut" to describe the Native people they encountered in the Aleutian Islands, the Alaska Peninsula, and the Kodiak archipelago.
- James Gilchrist Swan diary No. 10, University of Washington Libraries, Special Collections, PNW03752, entry for Sep. 11, 1866, appears to describe E4123, E4128, and E4129, given to James G. Swan by William W. Winsor, who acquired the pieces on a fishing voyage to the Kodiak Island area: " ... Cap Smalleys schooner Capt Crosby arrived today from Kodiac, where she has been on a cod fishing voyage[.] Capt Crosby, Capt Winsor and another man came ashore & stated that they had found good fishing grounds and had taken about 8000 fish and could have taken more but their provisions gave out[.] They were well satisfied with the trip as it proved the fact of the existence of fishing banks within 15 days sail of this place[.] Capt Winsor gave me a sealskin coat such as is worn by the natives, a hunting pouch and a little bird made of threads very prettily done by the Indians [.] ..."
