- This drawing of the centennial seal marks the one-hundred-year anniversary (1867–1967) of the founding of Howard University, an historically black university in Washington, DC.
- The design, drafted in graphite, color pencil, and ink, commemorates Howard University’s 1967 Centennial with a drawing of the clock tower on the University’s Founders Library. This seal appeared in all Howard University Centennial programs, including Charter Day and Commencement. The drawing of the seal was made by James A. Porter, renowned artist and art historian, who was both an alumnus and faculty member at Howard. Porter was invited by University President James Nabrit Jr. to serve on the Permanent History Committee for the Centennial Celebrations in 1961, during which time he likely produced this image. The text reads, “Howard University Centennial,” “The University in a Changing Society,” and “100th Year.”
