- Description
- Furloughs were brief periods granted to soldiers so that they could return home, usually lasting for a period of 30 days. In this color print, a soldier arrives home and is eagerly greeted by his loved ones. He embraces his wife and his children gather around him. The oldest son guides the soldier’s elderly father towards the man, and his mother, seen in the cottage’s window, holds up her hands in delight. A small dogs leaps up to greet his returning master and even the birds perched on the rooftop appear welcoming. Although the soldier will have to return to battle, this much-awaited chance to see his family clearly revitalizes him. Such a print may have been displayed by families impacted by the absence of a loved one fighting in the war and would provide hope for his eventual return.
