- Vice President Al Gore was the Democratic candidate for president in 2000. He was defeated by his Republican opponent George W. Bush, governor of Texas. Disposable campaign stickers were first produced in 1968. They were cheaper and easier to manufacture and were more fabric friendly than the traditional pin-back button.
