- "This historical picture was painted by Phillippoteaux, the celebrated artist of Paris. The scene is drawn on the great square of the Hotel de Ville, as taking place on the 24th of February, 1818: " 1st. Henry IV., in relief, above the door of the Hotel de Ville displays the flag of the republic, which the people have placed in his hands. " 2d. The people have just appointed the provisional government, the individuals whom they deem worthy of their confidence. It is entirely composed of citizens, viz: Dupont de D'Eure, president; Lamartine, Francois Arago, Ledru Rollin, Louis Blanc, Pagnere Flacon, Albert Marie Cremietin, Garnier Pages, and Armand Marast. " 3d. The people, the army, the national guard, and the schools, are awaiting n the grand square for the persons composing the new government in order to proclaim the republic. on their arrival M. de Lamartine mounts on a chair, and exclaims in a loud voice, 'my friends, the Republic is proclaimed . . . ' " 4th. General Durivier is seen with the officers of the Chasseurs, . . . " 5th. The troops of the line give in their adhesion to the Republic, . . . " 6th. The two brothers Benaud, sculptors. One of them fraternizes with the army, . . . his brother is seen carried on a species of litter, . . . having been mortally wounded in the chest . . . " 7th. Junot, a terrace maker, is on guard over the case which contains the offerings for the wounded. . . . " 8th. A piece of artillery in battery on the grand square, which fell into the hands of the people on the capture of the Hotel de Ville. " 9th. Roux, a journeyman mason, is shot to death . . . for having committed a theft during the fight. . . . " 10th. A pupil of the Polytechnic School in command of the escort that conveys the gold and silver ware . . . " 11th. The small statue representing Joan of Arc. . . . " 12th. The little drummer boy, Pierre, . . . " 13th. A pupil of the school of St. Cyr, carrying a small bag on his shoulder, is persuading the young women among the masses to retire from the ground to avoid danger. " 14th. The national guard in column, . . . " 15th. Marie of Lille, a beautiful brunette, on a white charger, . . . " 16th. The people during the combat, and also after the victory is achieved generously forgetting the past, carry on their standards their principles inscribed, to which they are eternally devoted, viz: 'abolition of the death penalty.'
