- This black and white print is an oval bust portrait of actor and comedian Frank Mayo in a rectangular frame. Below the print a torn datebill notice reads “Grand Opera House! Wednesday, Mar. 8.”
- Frank Maguire Mayo (1839-96) was born in Boston, the son of Irish immigrants. At the age of 14 he headed west with his family to California in search of success during the Gold Rush. After failing to make his fortune as a miner, he turned to the stage and made his acting debut in San Francisco at the age of 17. He worked in repertory theater and toured the country starring in a variety of roles, including the part of Ferdinand in Shakespeare's The Tempest and numerous other Shakespearean roles. In the early 1870s, he achieved his most lasting success as the lead in Davy Crockett, a play about the renowned frontiersman by Frank Murdoch (1843-72). Mayo was a popular performer who won praise for the realistic style and quiet authority he brought to the role, which he continued to perform for the next twenty years. He died of heart disease while on tour in a dramatized version of Mark Twain’s novel Puddn’head Wilson.
- This lithograph was produced by A. Hoen & Co., a lithographic firm in Baltimore, Maryland, and Richmond, Virginia. The company was established by August and Ernest Hoen in the 1840s after the death of Edward Webber and the takeover of the E. Weber Company.
