Floating Iceberg, Canada
Object Details

- Frederic Edwin Church, American, 1826–1900
- Description
- Seascape sketch showing a view of an immense, white iceberg floating on sea around Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Dark blue, rippling ocean waters extend through the foreground and into the middle distance, where they encounter the base of the iceberg. The berg itself is characterized by its many furrows and ridges, its tall, sheer face, and its craggy, undulating ridge--which culminates in a tall, triangular peak at center left. The flat ocean horizon is visible in the distance behind the iceberg. The sky above is rendered in a gradient from blue-green to rosy-blue.
