- FINELY WOVEN, CHECKER PLAITED, PANDANUS MAT WITH FRINGE AT TWO SIDES. RED THREAD IS WOUND ON A STRAND OF VEGETABLE FIBER AND ATTACHED TO THE FRINGE PORTION OF THE MAT. THE FRINGE IS APPROXIMATELY 3 TO 5 CM. LONG. THE PANDANUS STRANDS ARE 2 MM. IN WIDTH. THERE IS A SMALL HOLE IN THE MAT. HAS ORIGINAL PEALE.
- Peale catalogue identifies # 975 - 986 as ""Ie tana" [probably should be taua]. or fine mat made of a kind of rush like the papyrus, and worn by the Samoan women on festivals. They are valued highly - costing much time and labor to make them." The more current general term for the fine mat is 'ie toga.
- On p. 15 of National Institute for the Promotion of Science, W. (1855). A popular catalogue of the extraordinary curiosities in the National Institute, arranged in the building belonging to the Patent Office. Washington: A. Hunter, Peale # 975 is identified as "Fine mat worn by a woman of high rank."
