- Summary
- Coachee, 1780-1790. This is the only example known to exist of this type of light family carriage which was used in the mid-Atlantic states at the end of the 18th century. It is believed to be one of the oldest carriages built in the United States now preserved. There is also some reason to believe that this is the family "coachee" owned by George Washington at Mount Vernon, and mentioned in his diaries and letters. Photograph was taken outside the Arts and Industries Building.
