- Summary
- The eye of the Capitol dome is painted with four allegorical figures representing Missouri's agriculture, commerce, science, and education. The four figures, which are positioned with heads toward the center of the dome, are each accompanied by two small figures. Agriculture is represented by Mother Earth holding the fruits of her labor. Commerce is represented by a merchant holding a model ship. Science is represented by a male figure surrounded by cog wheels and other scientific devices. Education is a female figure with a globe behind her, a church on one side, and a lute on the other side, indicating education should include both religion and art.
