- Star Trek is an iconic American science fiction franchise that started as a television series created by Gene Roddenberry in the 1960s. The original series and its spinoff films follow the interstellar adventures of the crewmen aboard the starship USS Enterprise. After the broadcast run of the original series from 1966-1969, fans kept the spirit of Star Trek alive and it became a perennial ratings success in syndication reruns. The series was adapted as a 1979 motion picture starring the original cast; its box office success led to a dozen sequels and reboot films as well as over eleven spinoff television series, making Star Trek one of the most prolific and influential science fiction properties in American history.
