- This radiator emblem belonged to a Dixie Flyer automobile that was manufactured by the Dixie Motor Car Company (a subsidiary of Kentucky Wagon Works) of Louisville, Kentucky between 1916 and 1923. The Dixie Flyer had a four cylinder engine and came in a variety of body models that sold from between $1,500 and $2,500. In 1923 the company was purchased by Associated Motors and the remaining Dixie Flyers were rebadged as Nationals. The oval radiator emblem has “DIXIE” in the center with an extra large “X” that is overlapped by the word “flyer” inside an oval cartouche. The rim of the badge reads “Louisville, KY.” in gold lettering.
- Radiator emblems are small, colorful metal plates bearing an automobile manufacturer's name or logo that attached to the radiators grilles of early automobiles. Varying in shape and size, the emblems served as a small branding device, sometimes indicating the type of engine, place of manufacturing, or using an iconic image or catchy slogan to advertise their cars make and model. This emblem is part of the collection that was donated by Hubert G. Larson in 1964.
