- "1837. In the departure, a party of knights issue from their stronghold on a bright morning for a warlike purpose, in spite of the warning of a holy palmer, who vainly waves their leader back. In the return, an autumn sunset beholds the result of their enterprise. The leader is stretched wounded upon a litter borne by some foot-soldiers, while only one cavalier follows the riderless horse of his chief, as they slowly move to an abbey whence comes a procession of monks, while the holy palmer lifts his hands in pity."
