- Actor Daniel Day-Lewis is never much of a Hollywood presence. He will show up if there are studio demands, or to pick up a much-coveted Oscar trophy, of which he owns three (all for Best Actor, a record for males). His secret for success? Select your roles carefully—like his critically acclaimed lead in Lincoln (2012)—and leave plenty of time between films to pursue your passions, like woodworking.
- Day-Lewis has become an expert at pacing his career. Acting fatigue is a real threat for him because he immerses himself in his roles for weeks, dressing, speaking, and generally playing the character in his private life. “It’s in these months before the camera starts to turn,” he told Time during a two-year hiatus, “when you have this other life, and you can take any avenue toward it.”
