Confederate Army Infantry Captain's Frock Coat

- Description (Brief)
- This frock coat was worn by O. W. Barrow, a Captain in the 24th Virginia Volunteer Infantry regiment in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War. Double breasted gray wool frock coat which formerly had two rows of seven large gilt general service eagle buttons down the front. The bottom button on the right row is currently detached. There are two gilt buttons at the back waist, and three small buttons on each cuff. The detached button can be found in the right breast pocket. There is also a single button on each coattail at the bottom of the pocket opening. Both sides of the breast of the coat have button holes. There is a hook and eye closure at the collar. The collar and cuffs are faced with blue wool, which forms an inverted "V" on the cuff. Above the cuff there is a double row of elaborate 1/8" gold braid woven into an arabesque, which also lines top of cuffs. The collar has a Captain's three horizontal bars of 1/4" gold metallic tape on each side. There is an interior breast pocket on both sides. There is a deep pocket in each coattail accessible from the outside. Front and sides of body of coat are padded and quilted. Front insides of coat are faced with gray wool. The rest of the body of the coat is lined with off white cotton. Skirt is lined with dark green fabric. Lining of the sleeves is off white cotton. Collar lined with black fabric. There is a fabric loop at the inside back of the collar.
