- Description
- Created by compositing photographs of artifacts held by the National Museum American History, this massive photograph, 90X60 inches, celebrates the life and work of Celia Cruz.
- In 2012, the National Museum of American History held an online vote in which the public to selected Cruz from among four other historical figures to be the subject of a new photographic work. Weingarten produced this work especially for NMAH after Cruz’s fans overwhelmingly rallied to vote for her representation.
- Weingarten’s series, Portraits Without People, was a way of creating visual biographies of individuals by combining photographs of objects, documents, and locations that shaped their personal and professional lives. In Cruz’s portrait we see iconic clothes, shoes, headwear, her band and an award that together represents her public and professional life. The small religious figures and her marriage certificate note the religious and personal relationships that were important to her.
