Casio Memory-8A Handheld Electronic Calculator - Model CD-813

National Museum of American History

Object Details

Casio Computer Company
Description
This handheld electronic calculator has a gray and cream-colored plastic case, and square plastic keys. In addition to an array of ten digit keys, it has a decimal point key, a total key, and four arithmetic function keys to the right of the digit keys. Immediately above the digit keys are AC (all clear), C (clear entry), square root, and percentage keys. Above this is a switch for setting the result to floating point arithmetic or to round off with two decimal points, and three memory keys.
Behind the keyboard is an eight-digit vacuum fluorescent display. A mark above this reads: CASIO memory-8A (/) ELECTRONIC CALCULATOR.
The back of the calculator has a compartment for two batteries. The batteries and compartment cover are lacking. A sticker inside the compartment reads: 4036264. A tag below the battery compartment reads: CASIO memory-8A (/) BATTERY SUPPLY 1.5Vx2 (/) or use AC ADAPTOR AD-2S (/) 0.2W (/) CD-813 MADE IN JAPAN (/) BM CASIO COMPUTER CO., LTD. The socket for the adapter is along the top edge.
Opening the calculator reveals two circuit boards with assorted circuits. The largest of these has the inscription: NEC (/) μP0977C R56696. This object is somewhat different from the Casio Memory-8A described at the Vintage Technology website.
The calculator fits in a black plastic sleeve. A mark on the sleeve reads: JAPAN.
According to the Casio web site, this model was introduced in 1974. An October 1975 advertisement for several Casio calculators with memory asked: “When you’ve got a Casio Memory, who needs an elephant?" It indicates that the suggested retail price of this model was then $24.95. Further advertisements appeared in 1976.
