THIS IS RECTANGULAR MADE OF VERTICAL SECTIONS OF BAMBOO, FASTENED BY A ROD RUN THROUGH THEM SIDEWAYS., THE FOUR CORNERS LEFT LONGER AS LEGS. ON THE INSIDE OF ONE END IS A JAPANESE INSCRIPTION. THE ITEM WAS CALLED A SMALL FANCY TABLE OR STOOL."
- Inscription in Japanese. Translated, it says: "1852 the year of rat, autumn, Nanroshi II [possibly the name of the maker?]". Japanese govt. gift lists includes 1 bamboo bouquet holder and stand (cf. Chang-Su Houchins. 1995. Artifacts of Diplomacy: Smithsonian Collections from Commodore Matthew Perry's Japan Expedition (1853-1854). Smithsonian Contributions to Anthropology, Number 37, P. 138). Only the framework remains; parts are missing.
