Campaign Pin, Bryan/McKinley
Object Details
- associated person
- McKinley, William
- Bryan, William Jennings
- Description
- This button was designed to be worn by Republicans or Democrats or even undecided voters! Pushing the lever at the top would cause one of three images to appear in the window at the bottom—a picture of Republican candidate William McKinley, a picture of Democratic candidate William Jennings Bryan, or a panel saying “Here He Is.” Instructions on the back of the button explained: "Oh Stop Guessing! Presidential Problem Solved. Hold Button So Capitol Is Upright, Press Steeple and Candidate Appearing Most is a Sure Winner. Inclining Capitol Slightly to Either Side, One of the Candidate’s [sic] Will Appear Mostly. Select Your Choice, Lock Steeple, and Wear as a Campaign Button." McKinley emerged as the “sure winner” defeating Bryan in 1896 and again in 1900.
